Why is everyone so concerned with what other people (specifically women) are reading?

In my opinion, the discussion should be why are we normalizing that they are selling us books that poorly written/edited, specially when books are becoming more expensive. Every genere and its readers deserve to be taken seriously

People who read more older books have a higher reading comprehension than people who read mediocre „booktok“ books. Older books have different writing styles and vaster vocabularies which the readers acquire from reading those books. If someone only engages with literature that has no complexity and the required reading level of a 5th grader they will noticeably have a lower reading comprehension.

My take on this is, reading classics, modern classics and truly understanding them— being able to analyze them, means you’re smart. However u never know if someone is reading them without understanding, just for performance. The same way u never know that someone reading fourth wing hasn’t written an essay on 1984. What u choose to read depends on your mood and what u want from the reading, as u said, reading purely for entertainment is literally why we have books. Choosing to read for entertainment and not intellect doesn’t make u less smart.

The real issue is there is a war on intellectualism in this country, and has been for a while, especially from this current administration. I’m concerned this argument in the book space will drive people away from reading as a whole and that’s the LAST thing we need.

As a reader, I needed reading a lot more, and much more classics before being able to read Dostoïevski or Orwell. So I disagree because reading is a skill that comes with the comprehension and lexical abilities, like a muscle you need to train. So to read AND to understand these books there is a preriquisit of a certain level of intellectualism.

The philosophy the authors back then as Lermantov, Pushkin, Dostoyevsky, Camus, Kafka teach you something the modern authors can not teach. You can not compare Colleen Hoover and Dostoyevsky right? It doesn’t even make sense to compare them. The philosophy behind these books are is so powerful, that none of the modern romances will teach you this.

honestly, taking any book bad or good, reading it and analyzing the shit out of it and writing essays about it, improves your critical thinking more than reading 100 books mindlessly. Same goes for classics, they are just regular books as well.

Also why are we policing what people read? If there’s access to literature, then someone should be allowed to read what they desire without putting down other readers

the problem is that people don't know what they read and they don't critically engage with anything

In my mind, it’s not about the book. It’s about how you’re engaging with the book. Because to me as someone who is studying to be a teacher, you can turn a bad book into a very engaging lesson plan. Just to me it’s not the book that’s the problem. It’s the conversation conversations you have during reading and after reading. Also people do need to reread things sometimes you miss so many things on your first read, you will miss things but rereading it you can really dive into it

It’s about what questions you ask, how you read/engage with the material, what you notice while reading, what perspectives you have/note. You can engage with fantasy/romantasy in an intelligent manner, and if you’re a careful thinker you might get a whole lot out of it. Some people watch the little mermaid, and capture Deep ideas about it… others read LOTR and think it’s a good idea to name your company Palantir

People have become so elitist about reading. Reading for pleasure has found to be at an all time low. Let people enjoy some escapism. I love the classics, literary fiction, romantasy etc. everything you read contributes to your knowledge in some way. Let people live!

My issue with the publishing industry is that they are publishing surface level horribly written nonsense. How is a book like Quicksilver changing your life, 5 ⭐️Then the next video is a girl saying Babel was “trying to hard” & “why are we making this about race?” 1 ⭐️.
