@tsi.nelas1: After 18 years in SpED, I realized that most teacher burnout comes from trying to use "logic" on a nervous system that is in "fight or flight" mode. It doesn't work. Here is the breakdown of the 3 rules that saved my career: 1. Stop Arguing with Dysregulation: When a student is escalated, their prefrontal cortex (logic brain) is offline. They are operating purely on survival instinct. If you try to reason with them, you are just adding noise to the chaos. Wait for the storm to pass before you try to teach. 2. Detatch Your Ego: "I hate you" is almost never about you. It is usually the only weapon a powerless child has left. If you take it personally, you escalate the situation. Be the wall, not the target. Let it bounce off. 3. Silence is Strategy: Most teachers talk too much when they are nervous. We bark orders because we want control. But adding volume just adds energy to the fire. Silence creates a vacuum that forces the student to de-escalate. Save this list for the next time you feel your patience slipping on a Tuesday afternoon. We go again tomorrow. 🍎 #SpEDTeacher #BehaviorClassroom #ClassroomManagement #TeacherBurnout #DeescalationTips

As a 7th grade MMSN teacher, I fully endorse this. I deal with a majority of behavior students and I have found that modeling appropriate regulation strategies has worked best for me (“I’m going to take a minute to step back because I feel myself getting a little upset.”) and the whole class becomes SILENT and I’m able to continue teaching.

Great perspectives. First thing I usually do when I remove a deregulated child is go a for a brisk silent walk with them. You see the tension leaving their bodies.
