as a doctor, i need to clear something up here. free and low-cost clinics aren’t a limited stash that people should “leave” for someone more deserving. that’s not how they work. these clinics depend on people actually using them to show community need and keep funding. when fewer people come, clinics don’t get protected — they get cut. someone getting care there isn’t taking it from anyone else. and to the “resources are limited” argument — that limitation is a systems problem, not a patient problem. discouraging people from getting care doesn’t help anyone. it delays treatment, pushes people into crisis care later, and ultimately makes outcomes worse across the board. healthcare ethics don’t rank people by who looks sick enough or struggling enough to qualify. the real issue is a healthcare system built on artificial scarcity that then tells people to police each other. healthcare should be free. people using low-cost services as they’re intended isn’t the problem — it’s one of the reasons those clinics stay open in the first place.

I love your content but please know that health insurance is NOT for regular check ups, it's for emergencies. An emergency surgery with a multi-day hospital stay could wipe out everything you've saved and worked for in one swoop. It could put you in even worse debt than your student loans did. I hate this system too and wish there was a better way.
