#vroegevogels #bnnvara #vos
A gamma-ray burst is one of the most powerful and mysterious phenomena in the Universe, a brief but extremely intense emission of gamma radiation, the most energetic form of light. These bursts last from fractions of a second to several minutes, but in this short time they can release a colossal amount of energy — comparable to what the Sun will emit over its entire lifetime. Scientists distinguish two main types of gamma-ray bursts: short bursts, which last less than two seconds and are believed to occur when neutron stars or a neutron star collide with a black hole; and long bursts, which last longer, are associated with the death of very massive stars, when their core collapses to form a black hole, accompanied by a powerful release of energy and sometimes a supernova. Despite their incredible power, most gamma-ray bursts occur at vast distances — in other galaxies, billions of light-years from Earth — and therefore pose no direct threat. However, theoretically, if such a burst were to occur relatively nearby and its narrow energy beam were directed directly at Earth, it could lead to ozone depletion, increased ultraviolet radiation levels, and serious consequences for the biosphere. #scary #spaceedit #astrophysics #physics
