Every time I feel needed instead of wanted, I start looking for a new contract. Inevitably, the manager or department that “needs” me starts resenting the dependency. I’ve seen it happen too many times. “We love Ed because he builds great stuff for us!” is 1,000,000 times better than, “We can’t afford for Ed to leave because he’s the only one that knows all the business logic.”
