@christian.autism.adhd: People used to say ADHD wasn’t real. That it was just laziness. Bad parenting. Kids who needed “more discipline.” They said the same thing about epilepsy. Before brain science advanced, seizures were blamed on behavior, possession, or moral failure. People were punished for something their nervous system couldn’t control. Now we understand epilepsy for what it is: a neurological condition. ADHD followed the same path. Dismissed. Minimized. Moralized. Until research caught up and showed what parents had known all along—this is about the brain, not character. And here’s why this matters so much for parenting: When we mislabel neurological differences as behavior problems, we respond with pressure instead of support. Punishment instead of understanding. Shame instead of skill-building. ADHD isn’t a lack of effort. Autism meltdowns aren’t manipulation. Dysregulation isn’t defiance. They are signals from a nervous system doing its best with the wiring it has. That doesn’t mean there are no boundaries. It means boundaries must be paired with regulation and support—or they won’t work. History has shown us this pattern before. We don’t shame brains once we understand them. If you’re parenting a child whose needs are misunderstood, you’re not alone—and you’re not imagining the struggle. Follow for more insight from a parent who’s walked this road and learned how understanding changes everything. #adhdparenting #autismparenting #neurodiversity #brainbasedparenting #specialneedsparenting
