These fish use bait balls as camouflage, waiting for the perfect moment to ambush larger prey. To get its attention, I dug in the sand and sent up a cloud of particles—and it worked instantly. The barracuda peeled out of the school and came straight toward me, locked eyes, and just hovered there, sizing me up. Moments like this are why I love diving. Calm, intense, and absolutely unreal to experience up close. Great barracuda can reach speeds of over 40 km/h (25 mph) in short bursts. They rely heavily on sight and reflection, which is why shiny objects can attract them. Hiding inside bait balls helps them blend in and strike without being seen.
