@brycepatingre: Who is Woody Allen? Allen began as TV comedy writer in the 1950s alongside Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner. In the 60s he did standup in Greenwich Village, leading to regular appearances on The Johnny Carson Show. Film and theater followed. Early films were slapstick: TAKE THE MONEY AND RUN, BANANAS, SLEEPER. ANNIE HALL (1977) beat STAR WARS for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actress for Diane Keaton. He replaced slapstick with something bittersweet and introspective, influenced by Bergman and Fellini. Through the 80s and 90s, Allen bounced between drama and comedy, regularly nominated for screenwriting: HANNAH AND HER SISTERS, HUSBANDS AND WIVES, THE PURPLE ROSE OF CAIRO. In 1992, his relationship with Mia Farrow ended after she discovered he was involved with her adopted daughter Soon-Yi Previn, who he later married. Farrow accused him of abusing their adopted daughter Dylan. He was never charged, but allegations never went away. After critically panned early 2000s films, he made MATCH POINT, MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, and BLUE JASMINE. His influence is undeniable, but watching his films now means confronting cringeworthy storylines reminding you of allegations. Life_on_film200 :
I used to adore woody Allen when I was in hs. Annie hall was just amazing to a young impressionable romantic like me and Manhattan to a high schooler seemed fine because I was SEVENTEEN LMAO! But I watched it again recently and felt sick especially after Epstein stuff oof. The only movie I can REALLY separate of his is midnight in Paris. Owen Wilson’s charm is undeniable and woody himself isn’t in it.

same with Roman Polanski. Terrible human being, but very hard to deny that his work from Rosemary Baby, Chinatown, to The Pianist is close to a cinematic perfection.

I just don’t like his stuff - and he’s a CREEP. He does not appeal to me and I will NEVER support him or his work.

I’ve always wondered why we focus only on the big names? Imagine a movie written, directed and acted by Saints, but the entire crew were abusive monsters guilty of the most profane and abominable actions. How would we think about that film in terms of separating art from artists?
