@livjowen: When River didn’t finish his checklist and didn’t earn the surprise, he was understandably upset 💔 (and honestly just exhausted!) We talked through the disappointment earlier, but when it kept coming back up, the best thing to do was stay firm and simple. No reward this time. You get to try again tomorrow. Now it’s time to rest. Sometimes helping our kids handle disappointment means not over-explaining, not negotiating, and not reopening the door to arguments. Just teaching them to accept the outcome, learn from it, move on, and try again next time 🩵 #parenting #parentingtips #momtips #momssupportingmoms #toddlermomlife

Is he not allowed to have emotion? He’s not being mean or aggressive or harming anyone. He’s crying. Why is that so bad? Honestly asking.

Letting a child have emotions is far different then letting them carry on when something is not that serious. As adults we have to regulate our emotions…yes we can feel them, but we can’t just walk around out of control. That’s what’s she’s teaching him. He can be upset but let’s help them rationalize and calm themselves. If he was injured or sick or something serious and she was saying to stop, that’s different as well.

Telling a child to calm down firmly is never ok. Softly saying it to help them is ok (like the first two tjmes). But firm is just telling them they aren’t allowed to be upset, it’s not helping them.

My issue is she never acknowledges that his feelings are VALID. Guiding your children through their emotions is great, but it's okay to be sad or cry due to disappointment, that's a natural response. By never acknowledging the emotion you only teaching them how to stifle how they genuinely feel.

River seems like the sweetest boy and is expressing age appropriate sadness. Let him cry with support vs. cutting him off

When do you start this boundary at, like what age. And this style of discispline?

I honestly just have one question. Doesn't this suppress their need to express their emotions ? If I was crying and someone was like CALM DOWN AND LISTEN, I wouldn't feel seen and heard

Walk a mile in this momma’s shoes. She has a large family to take care of. Her family is well taken care of. She is patient, loving, and setting firm boundaries. What some of you are not taking in consideration is that this is bedtime. Having him a have a complete meltdown right before sleeping is not the best thing for him. She let him express himself verbally, offered a reason why he didn’t get his “surprise “, and ended the night with a lot of positive thoughts. She also offered a solution to the problem so he could be successful the next day. I feel like this was handled beautifully and a lot better than I could have. Good job momma!!!!

I would have validated his feelings a bit more and also not told him to calm down with the stern tone. It really did sound punitive. The swift change of focus was awesome though!!!

Telling in to calm down stops himself from becoming overwhelmed and then tantrum, he is still feeling his emotions but in a respectful way and he is calming his self down. When he grows up he’s gonna be able to handle disappointment without being child
