Absolutely not. If you are inviting someone to your home for dinner, you are hosting them and cooking for them. So the proper thing to do is asked to bring a bottle of wine or a dessert.

She traveled out of state to visit that friend. The VERY least she could have done is feed her without asking to split the cost of dinner

It is weird to ask a friend to split the cost but if I was staying as a guest at someone’s home for the weekend I would try & pay for the groceries

A good friend would not have asked. But I would have bought the wine 🍷. Which in this situation, would have been more money then the dinner 😂

I host people and parties fairly frequently. If I’m hosting, I pay. I often do a potluck style for larger events to offset it which is much less crass

Absolutely not. In what world is this ok. If I’m inviting people over, I know I’ll need to feed them and that’s on me.

Kylie’s Travel Guide ✈️🌎 :
for some reason, going to the grocery store together makes it feel more reasonable to split the cost as opposed to just meeting at your house. But also if you’re visiting from out of town, that’s totally different. you spent the money and took the time to travel, the least they can do is cook you a meal

occasionally my husband and his best friend will split the cost of like steaks or brisket or some other expensive meat once of them plans to cook when we all hang out but its something they come up with and plan together. when we invite them over for dinner we cover costs

Yes it’s crazy to ask to split. Buttt if someone did that to me and I was staying in their guest room for a weekend I’d probably just say “let me pay for all of it since I’m staying with you”. Less weird than venmo-ing for it.

I don’t think splitting the cost is weird. My husband and I don’t have much. I’m talking we put groceries On a credit card a lot of the time. So we often split with friends. However we let them know “hey we really want to see you but we’ve had nonexistent funds, would you like to go halvsies for dinner so we can catch up?” That way it’s part of the invitation. They can say no if they want. No biggie. But this friend traveled to come see this person and was not given the heads up upon invitation. This is an unexpected expense and honestly I think it’s tacky the way this was handled.
