Im confused as to how it’s all over the place with its tone? Like we see this early violence to show where Tom comes from, who he’s gonna deal with and from there it unravels how this quaint small town family man has built a fake life which he struggles with trying to keep or ending the circle because of how being this violent impacts his family (since he doesn’t want his son to be like him but he’s obviously preaching from the jail cell at this point). It’s also pretty true to the comic outside of the end changing almost simply to condense characters since Richie is the boss instead of being tortured by the boss who tom has to put out of misery.

It’s not terrible but Cronenberg basically depicts humans as if he’s an alien who doesn’t quite understand them. And that’s very uncanny in a unique way

Pretty consistently deliberate choices by Cronenberg it seems. I was on set for this way back in 2004 & the choices were intentional, the shooting script itself was very much the same tone as the completed movie. In terms of pacing, dialogue etc It was certainly a choice!
