However, this is not only illegal in most cases, but also extremely dangerous for these demanding animals. Otters are wild animals and by no means suitable as cuddly pets. Mittlerweile hat die seit der Jahrtausendwende stark zugenommene Nachfrage zur Folge, dass sich die Population einiger Otterarten um bis zu 30 Prozent verringert hat. Auch die unkritische Darstellung der Otter in menschlicher Obhut, wie sie in den sozialen Netzwerken geschieht, ist Teil des Problems, denn sie befördert den Trend noch.
