@moonfervent: Orcas, Orcinus orca, also known as killer whales! Orcas are the largest species of oceanic dolphin within the family Delphinidae - classed under the order Odontoceti (meaning “toothed-whales”). 🖤 They are most well-known as 3 different ecological groups; Resident (fish-eating), Transients/Biggs (mammal-eating), and Offshore (shark-eating specialists!). There are however, multiple different pods in all regions that differ significantly in diet, dialect, and culture/behaviours - with 10 ecotypes currently recognized! Orcas are an extremely intelligent species, with advanced cognitive abilities and intricately structured brains. They have the words largest insular cortex (a part of the brain linked to emotion, empathy, and self-awareness) and a highly developed paralimbic lobe which again indicates complex emotional and social lives. The paralimbic lobe is something that human beings don’t have in our brains, pointing towards evidence that the emotional intelligence and neural capabilities of orcas surpasses that of humans. god seeing orcas like this instead of inside small tanks makes my heart melt. as much as i'd love to give those orcas attention because it's NEVER their faults, i cannot simply entertain the thought of what actually goes on behind those captivities and how ppl can just simply ignore it☹️but omg orcas are my FAVORITE animal ever. they're so misunderstood. (also the pic is my cat and my orca plushy :3)
