@inventionontt: The Botafumeiro is a massive silver plated incense burner used in Santiago de Compostela Cathedral in northwestern Spain. It hangs from the cathedral’s dome and is traditionally swung during special religious services, especially on major feast days and when large numbers of pilgrims arrive. The name Botafumeiro comes from the Galician words for smoke and fumigate, reflecting its original purpose of perfuming the air inside the church. The censer weighs about 53 kilograms or roughly 130 pounds when empty and can reach speeds of up to 68 kilometers per hour as it arcs across the transept. It is attached to a thick rope and pulled by a team of cathedral attendants known as tiraboleiros, who coordinate their movements to build momentum. At full swing, the Botafumeiro can travel nearly the length of the cathedral, passing high above the congregation in a dramatic and carefully controlled motion. Historically, the Botafumeiro served a practical function as well as a ceremonial one. During the Middle Ages, thousands of pilgrims often arrived tired and unwashed after long journeys on the Camino de Santiago, and the incense helped mask odors and purify the air. Today it remains one of the most iconic rituals in the cathedral, symbolizing both spiritual cleansing and the long tradition of pilgrimage that has made Santiago de Compostela one of Christianity’s most important holy sites.
