NASA never actually stopped exploring the ocean; rather, the way they explore has shifted from deep-sea diving to high-tech satellite monitoring from space. The persistent online rumor that they “quit” in 1958 or 1978 to escape a “scary discovery” is a viral myth often found on TikTok and Reddit. In reality, 1978 was the year NASA launched Seasat, the first-ever satellite dedicated to oceanography, marking the beginning of their modern era of ocean research. Today, NASA works alongside NOAA (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), which serves as the lead agency for underwater missions and ship-based exploration, while NASA provides the “big picture” data on sea-level rise, currents, and ocean temperature from orbit. Far from being afraid of the deep, NASA is currently using Earth’s oceans as a laboratory to prepare for the Europa Clipper mission, which launched in 2024 to explore the massive liquid ocean hidden beneath the ice of Jupiter’s moon, Europa.(MP4)
