Trees do not literally explode into pieces, but they can produce loud,, gun-shot-like cracks during extreme cold, a phenomenon known as "frost cracking." Rapid temperature drops cause the water-rich sap inside to freeze and expand, while the outer bark contracts faster than the wood, resulting in sharp, splitting sounds that can mimic an explosion.

If this bizarre weather episode is found to be weather tampering from our "smart" humans, they need to be held accountable!! It's strange enough when Mother Nature gets mad and wreaks her own havoc, but if we have butted in like so many think....then something seriously needs to be done to stop future messes!!
