@alex_military_money: Military retirement isn’t just a paycheck. It’s a seven-figure benefit when you understand how it actually works! #militarylife #militarytiktok #navy #retirement #militarywife
There is more to it, depending on time is service. Your military retirement is taxed 😳. You get another job after the military. You in a higher tax bracket; more taxes to Uncle Sam 😁. With TSP you can do Roth, with gains of on avg 10% (it’s more). The stock market always wins!

losing g 10% is absolutely nowhere close to 1000 a month. that would require your pension to be 10000 a month. an average pension is less than half of that.

Biggest problem with BRS is the earliest you can touch it is 59 1/2. Most who do 20 years retire between 37-45. That’s A LOT of years of being retired before you’ll start seeing that extra money.

Losing that 10% and only getting 5% match that I couldn’t touch for another 20 years roughly is why I didn’t swap when I had the chance and now I’m 6 years from that 50% for life

My wife and I both retired under high-3. BRS sounded like BS.

Great information but prior to 2018, we were given the option to switch to BRS or not. So it’s not JUST if you joined prior to 2018, you had the option to change.

Do you get the 40% right after 20 years or have to wait until you’re retirement age?

That’s one way to explain it…BRS is a way for the government saves some money and kind of put the responsibility onto the service member to contribute for their own retirement🙂 Additionally those under BRS can still reach the 50% retirement if they continue serving beyond 20years…2% per additional year…20years = 40%…25years = 50%…Additionally, BRS allows you to take a 25% or 50% lump-sum payout at retirement in exchange for a reduced monthly check until full retirement age (usually 67). A higher total pension value at 20+ years directly increases the size of this potential cash payout…🫡 good info video

The most important investment you make in your young career is who you build your life with. Do not get married on a whim. Divorce & child support are heart breaking and expensive. And yes, activate that TSP today and make a plan to increase your contributions at every pay anniversary.

23 years as an E8 and it was a much better option to do high 3. Except in reserves we don’t get any pay til we are 60

Good info here. Everyone needs to make sure they look at the taxes, age requirements, and risk vs reward of a 401k before you run that direction. Either way, at least folks can leave with something after a single contract.

I was final pay retirement, 53.5 percent retirement. Most of us who came in the 80s that is all we got. No GI bill.

well Hi :
If you contribute a minimum 5% and invest aggressively for 20 years, you'll be better off than the high 3.

I would love to do something together as I am retiring just like many others and regardless of the retirement system, investing either makes you or breaks you. I will retire at 20 with a pension and with a massive nest egg for investing into the TSP and other retirement / investment accounts.
