Healing my money wound was profound. I got to a point where I finally did or acquired all the things that everyone around me insisted would make all troubles disappear - including losing 170 pounds. None of them did. The weight loss was good but presented whole new problems. The stuff was overwhelming and mostly empty. I donated over half of it when we moved. We don’t do holiday/occasion based gifts in my household, now. We do uplifting experiences instead. No item but my car made it all better and the car just meant reliable movement to get to places and people I love. Shopping makes me low key sick now, unless at a Farmers market or craft / art market (where I spend to support my community, more than acquiring more stuff, and usually gift what I get).

We stopped giving our kids gifts and give them experiences and memories of connecting through shared experiences.

You can hear it in well meaning people when they defend immigrants, saying they’re just good, hard-working people. That should not matter. They are people, we are people. I have birthright citizenship. I would hate it if I didn’t produce enough one day or didn’t meet some kind of quota, and my ability to stay here was jeopardized because of a bad day. We are legitimate because we exist, not because of what we can make, produce, or spend and consume.
