It was the most destructive tornado of a historic late-season outbreak that produced over 70 tornadoes across nine states Confirmed 57 direct fatalities and over 500 injuries. It was the deadliest tornado in U.S. history for the month of December. The tornado struck Mayfield at approximately 9:26 p.m. CST, causing catastrophic damage to the historic downtown. Following the disaster, surviving workers at the candle factory filed a class-action lawsuit alleging that supervisors threatened to fire them if they left work before the tornado hit. Which caused added 8-9 fatalities out of the 57. The tornado is rated EF-4 (190mph peak windspeeds.)
