On Jan. 24, 2026, federal law enforcement officers shot and killed a 37-year-old Minneapolis man identified as Alex Jeffrey Pretti, a U.S. citizen and intensive-care nurse, during a federal immigration enforcement operation in south Minneapolis that has already been rocked by controversy and unrest; the Department of Homeland Security said agents fired “defensive shots” after the man allegedly approached U.S. Border Patrol officers with a handgun and resisted efforts to disarm him, but Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara acknowledged the victim was believed to be a lawful gun owner with a permit and had limited prior contact with law enforcement, and video and eyewitness accounts have raised questions about what actually happened on the street. The shooting drew hundreds of protesters to the scene amid an ongoing immigration crackdown that has already included the fatal shooting of another Minneapolis resident earlier in January, with local officials, civil liberties groups and community members demanding transparency, accountability, and an end to the federal operation, even as state police and the National Guard were deployed to help manage tensions and calls for calm were issued by law enforcement leadership. #truecrime #breakingnews #minneapolis #justice #shooting - @spotlightsynergy
