A caller reported noisy people drinking. They hurled bottles. Then they piled into a car. The cops soon eyed a white 2009 Chevy Impala. It matched the tip. The car swung into a lot on Newark Avenue's 1400 block. They pulled it over at the Speedway station on 1401 Willow Avenue. The driver was 23-year-old Destiney Mathis. Officer Guido smelled alcohol as he talked to her. He spotted clear signs of impairment. He told her to step out. Time for sobriety tests. He began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus check. Next came Walk and Turn. Destiney missed heel-to-toe steps. Her turn went wrong. Last was One Leg Stand. She kept her foot low. Her count skipped beats. The caller's words, her sloppy signs, failed tests—all added up. Officers cuffed her for DUI. A quick car search turned up open tequila. They impounded the Impala for 12 hours under John's Law. Then they drove her to headquarters. There, they read the standard statement for drivers. She said no to breath tests. Paperwork done, they let her go with a sober friend. She signed the liability warning for court. Citations hit her hard: Operating under influence. Reckless driving. Consent for breath sample. Refusal of chemical test. Open container.
