When I started medical school in 2018, my general surgery dean—an incredible surgeon—shared a story that stuck with me. When she became staff, there wasn’t even a space for her to change. The male surgeons had their quarters, the nurses had theirs, but a dedicated spot for female staff? Nowhere to be found. Fast forward to 2025—and somehow, I find myself in a similar situation. As a female resident in a largely male group, there isn’t space for my locker. It’s not intentional, but it’s a reminder that the system wasn’t built with us in mind. 👩‍⚕️ Women now make up over 50% of medical school classes, yet in fields like orthopedic surgery, only 13.6% of surgeons are women. While progress is happening, the experience of being a woman in surgery is still different. ⚖️ It’s the little things—like finding a place to change, navigating leadership roles, or feeling like you have to prove yourself just a little more. Our male colleagues don’t always see it because they haven’t had to think about it. But for us, it’s daily. 💬 To the women who came before me, who I once thought were just “tough”—I see you now. I understand. The quiet battles, the pushback, the moments of isolation. I know things are changing. But I also know we’re not there yet.
