Its shallow shores meant that the foghorn would have to carry the sound far to sea. Augustin Fresnel was a french inventor of the lens that is used in lighthouses all over the world. Sadly he passed away in 1827 and the foghorn was invented in 1853 by a scotsman called Robert Foulis, so Fresnel never experienced the calming sound of a massive foghorn.
