The pension changes coming in April 2027 could catch a lot of people out. For years, a common strategy was simple: Spend your ISA first. Leave your pension invested for as long as possible. That was partly because pensions generally sat outside your estate for inheritance tax purposes. From 6 April 2027, most unused pension funds and death benefits are expected to be included in your estate for inheritance tax. If that goes ahead as planned, it could change how many people approach retirement and estate planning. This does not make pensions a bad option. You still get tax relief, tax-efficient growth, employer contributions and long-term compounding. But it does make flexibility more valuable. That is where ISAs come in. Money can be accessed whenever you want, and withdrawals are tax-free. For many people, the answer will be a balance between pensions and ISAs, not relying too heavily on either one.
