Happy to answer any questions about Thing or owning a jumping spider in general, but here are some quick PSAs you should know: - DO NOT CAPTURE WILD JUMPING SPIDERS: All spiders are vital components of their respective ecosystems. Moreover you could be taking a mother away from her egg sac. - BE WARY OF PET STORES: Major pet stores have caught on to jumper interest and may sell them at some locations, but they can be mislabeled, pregnant, neglected, or ill. Spiders purchased from pet stores are basically rescues. - BREEDER IS BEST: Save the “adopt don’t shop” sentiment for the dogs. Find a local, reputable spider breeder if you decide to have one as a pet. This will ensure that the spider you’re bringing home is in good health as breeders monitor their specimens from birth and are more knowledgeable than pet store employees. This will also help “domesticate” your spider to human interaction. - NEVER RELEASE: Unless you’re certain your spider’s species is indigenous to your region, DO NOT under any circumstances release them into the wild if you can no longer care for them. In some cases you may be in violation of state or federal law. - EASY TO CARE FOR: Like any pet, jumping spiders have specific needs, however, they are largely considered low commitment and affordable. I find Thing to be easier to care for than a goldfish. - DO YOUR RESEARCH: While you may feel you know a lot about spiders, you know far less than you think you do. Don’t be influenced (even by me) into an impulsive decision. You can change your relationship with spiders without owning one.
