@louisethompson: Has anyone else experienced this extreme nerve pain in their bum before? It’s very specific and I imagine only those who have had their colon removed/ been left with a rectal stump will relate…. But maybe others who have had gastro surgeries too? This nerve pain is AGONISING and I had it in the middle of the night again for a good 30 minutes last night. It was v scary because the last time this happened I ended up having a perforation?&?!? I’m not having an ulcerative colitis flare at all, so the pain is the result of something else? Am I never going to be able to exercise properly again for the rest of my life without this intense tugging in that area? #stoma #colectomy #gastro #autoimmunedisease #louiseisgettingbetter

God this might sound ridiculous but the fact that other people have experienced the same actually makes me feel instantly less alone and scared. Sometimes social media CAN be good!!!!

It’s called Proctalgia fugax is a sharp, fleeting anal spasm, often linked to hormone fluctuations during menstruation, particularly high levels of prostaglandins, which trigger rectal muscle contractions. Sudden dips in estrogen and progesterone, coupled with the release of these hormone-like chemicals, can cause spasms in the pelvic floor and digestive muscles.

Yes! I still get this even with no rectal stump (I have ‘Barbie bum’). I generally have to sit in the bathroom and ‘push’ as if ‘going’ 💩 and it eases it. It’s like a phantom feeling.

Female aged 44. I’ve been having this since my mid twenties and it’s become slightly more regular since peri-menopause. I’ve been tracking it on my notes for the last 10 years and I can see a pattern of it happening on day 13-16 of my cycle, usually day 14. So odd. It does happen outside of this but less frequently. Rarely have it in the day.

Buscopan sorts me out when I get this. Stress causes it for me. I also have Diverticulitis so that maybe a factor. I’ve had this last an hour and literally not be able to move an inch

It’s called Proctalgia Fugax, I have ulcerative colitis, I am not currently in a flare but still experienced this, pelvic floor therapy has helped massively, cannot recommend it highly enough. It’s so painful and scary, definitely chat with a pelvic floor therapist and see if they can help.
