The common thread is a preservative called DMDM hydantoin — a "formaldehyde releaser." Here's why it's in there: to keep a bottle of shampoo from growing bacteria and mold for years, brands add DMDM hydantoin, which works by slowly releasing small amounts of formaldehyde into the formula over time. The problem is formaldehyde is a known human carcinogen — the same chemical used to preserve tissue — and because it forms inside the bottle instead of being added directly, it never has to appear on the ingredient list. You then lather it into your scalp, which absorbs readily. The fix is simple: choose a shampoo that skips formaldehyde-releasing preservatives — brands like SheaMoisture and Native leave them out.
