@teachergayz: How Table Salt Is Formed | Sodium + Chlorine Chemical Reaction #fyp #chemistry #Science Mini Lesson: Sodium, Chlorine, and Table Salt. Sodium (Na) is a highly reactive metal. On its own, it is not safe to use because it reacts easily with water and air. Chlorine (Cl) is a poisonous gas. By itself, it is harmful and dangerous to inhale. When sodium and chlorine combine, they undergo a chemical reaction and form a new compound called sodium chloride (NaCl). Table salt (sodium chloride) is a stable, safe solid that we use every day to season and preserve food. Its properties are completely different from sodium and chlorine.
