"Gone but not forgotten. A ship of dreams, and a night of tears. Rest in peace to all aboard." 11:40 PM – The Collision On the night of April 14, 1912, the RMS Titanic was sailing through calm, moonless waters at nearly 22 knots – close to her maximum speed – despite receiving multiple ice warnings. Lookouts Frederick Fleet and Reginald Lee, working without binoculars, suddenly spotted a massive iceberg dead ahead. Fleet rang the warning bell three times and shouted, "Iceberg right ahead!" First Officer William Murdoch immediately ordered "Hard a-starboard" to turn the ship and "Full astern" to reverse the engines. The huge liner began to turn, but she was too large and moving too fast. Instead of a head-on crash, the iceberg scraped along the starboard (right) side of the hull, just below the waterline. The impact was so gentle that many passengers barely felt it, but the jagged ice had sliced open a series of holes and buckled plates along nearly 300 feet of the ship's bottom, flooding six watertight compartments. 11:50 PM – The Realization Engineers and shipbuilder Thomas Andrews inspected the damage and made a devastating calculation: the Titanic was designed to stay afloat with up to four compartments flooded – but six were breached. Water was pouring in faster than pumps could remove it, and the bow began to sink lower into the sea, causing water to spill over bulkheads into the next compartments one by one. Andrews told Captain Edward Smith the ship would sink in about an hour and a half, maybe two. 00:00 AM – Emergency Measures The order was given to prepare lifeboats and send distress signals. Wireless operators Jack Phillips and Harold Bride sent out "CQD" and the new "SOS" calls, while distress rockets were fired into the sky to alert nearby ships. The closest vessel, the Californian, was only about 10 miles away, but her radio operator had gone to bed, and her crew mistook the rockets for fireworks or signals between ships. 00:25 AM – Loading Lifeboats Captain Smith ordered "women and children first" into the lifeboats. Tragically, there were only enough lifeboats and rafts to carry about half the people on board – a common practice at the time, as they were meant to ferry people to rescue ships, not hold everyone at once. Many boats were launched half-empty because passengers and crew did not yet believe the "unsinkable" ship was really going down. 01:30 AM – The Situation Worsens As the bow sank deeper, the stern rose high out of the water, exposing the propellers. The strain on the ship's structure became unbearable. Lights flickered, power failed briefly, and the noise of grinding metal and breaking machinery filled the air. Panic began to spread as more people realized there would not be enough space for everyone. 02:10 AM – The Break With the bow submerged and the stern tilted almost vertically, the immense weight caused the ship to split in two between the second and third funnels. The bow section broke free and plunged quickly to the ocean floor, while the stern settled back briefly before rising again almost straight up, hanging in the air for a few moments. 02:20 AM – The Final Plunge Water rushed into the stern section, and it too began to sink rapidly, disappearing beneath the waves at 2:20 AM on April 15. The entire journey from collision to sinking took just 2 hours and 40 minutes. Hundreds of people who could not get into boats were left in the freezing Atlantic waters, where most died within minutes from hypothermia. Only about 700 people were rescued by the RMS Carpathia, which arrived around 4:00 AM. More than 1,500 lives were lost. #shiptok #whitestarline #titanic #viral #fyp
