10 things I think about as a doctor that remind me this is the best job in the world: 1. Being invited into someone’s worst day….. and trusted to help carry it 2. The silence in a room when a family is scared… and the privilege of being the one they look to 3. Watching a child who was critically ill smile, laugh, and go home 4. Holding a parent’s hand when there are no perfect words 5. The moments where the best medicine isn’t about orders or labs but being present 6. Earning a family’s trust in hours that may feel like a lifetime to them 7. The team around me…. showing up, sacrificing, and caring deeply every single day 8. The weight of the responsibility… and the honor that comes with it 9. Being reminded daily how fragile life is and how sacred health truly is 10. Spending the last moments with a patient and their family hearing all about their life, memories family, love, and dreams 11. Knowing how medicine has changed and molded my heart for the better…. 12. Seeing the strength and resilience of a child 13. Witnessing patients healed from cancer 14. Being invited by the family to a patients wake/funeral because they knew the patient would want me there 15. Spending the last days with a patient in their home as they went home on hospice and getting to hear all Of their incredible memories and stories 16. Building friendships with the medical team I work with that will last a lifetime 17. Doing the worm for a patient and embarrassing myself because they dared me to 18. Cooking and sharing a patients favorite meal for them as one of their last meals 19. Sharing my passions and dreams with my patients so they get to know me as I experience some of their most vulnerable and hard moments 20. Having the opportunity to work with medical students and residents to show them the privilege it is to be a doctor I don’t take a single day of this for granted. This job is hard… but it’s also one of the greatest privileges I’ll ever have.
