Summary Step 1 is always technique. If the medicine doesn’t reach the lungs, it cannot control the disease. Step 2 is schedule. You must clearly separate: • Rescue inhalers – used as needed for quick relief • Controller (maintenance) inhalers – taken on a strict daily schedule, even when you feel okay Your dose may be different from someone else’s. These schedules are NOT interchangeable — they are FIXED as prescribed: • 1 puff once daily • 2 puffs once daily • 1 puff twice daily • 2 puffs twice daily The key is this: follow YOUR prescription exactly. Maintenance inhalers work best when they become part of your daily routine. The best place to keep them? Right next to your toothbrush — use them, then rinse your mouth with water afterward (especially for steroid inhalers).
