@kruger.hz: The Tupolev Tu-114, also known by NATO as "Cleat” was a remarkable Soviet long-range turboprop airliner developed in the mid-1950s by adapting the Tu-95 strategic bomber, making it the largest, fastest, and longest-ranged turboprop passenger aircraft ever to enter service. Powered by four massive Kuznetsov NK-12 engines with contra-rotating propellers—the most powerful turboprops ever built—it cruised at jet-like speeds of around 800 km/h while being far more fuel-efficient than early jets, allowing nonstop intercontinental flights such as Moscow–Tokyo and Moscow–Havana. Despite its bomber origins, the Tu-114 was redesigned with a pressurized double-deck cabin, luxurious seating, sleeping berths, dining areas, and exceptional safety margins due to its extremely strong airframe, which was built to military standards. However, its enormous size created challenges, including very tall landing gear that made boarding difficult at smaller airports, loud cabin noise from the propellers, and limited airport compatibility. Entering service with Aeroflot in 1959 and flying until 1976 without a single fatal passenger accident caused by structural or engine failure, the Tu-114 symbolized Soviet engineering ambition during the Cold War, proving that turboprop technology could rival early jet airliners in speed, range, and reliability on the world stage. #CapCut #sovietunion #tu114 #aeroflot #coldwar
