Exactly, and to add a minor point, we cognitively find it distressing to be disproven. This is why algorithms tend towards extremism, because reinforcement gives you dopamine, having your world view questioned is distressing.

Generalization, dangerous and useful depending on how you use it. It's easy for people to misunderstand and think "well we use generalization in the way we conduct studies on groups of people to solve societal issues" , and while that can be true, it cannot be applied to personal experiences in the same way as it always boils down to bias and small sample sizes. Although convincing someone to prioritize truth or statistical probability over personal experiences and beliefs is a very tough sell 😜

I like this theory. Eventually though you see the new pattern in the data you've collected, like "oh I seem to keep doing/encountering X"

Glad to see I'm apparently not the only one who has had it with lazy gender war takes. I won't shed a tear if I never have to hear some binary hot take on icks, flags, double standards and whatnot ever again. You make some great points, especially the confirmation bias one is tricky to overcome, but it's doable for sure. But there's another sneakier system called heuristics that's a lot tougher to circumvent, mostly because it's so crucial for us to have an operational brain. It offloads our "proven" choices to our unconscious brain, so it can fasttrack them and we don't waste time making the same choice over and over again. Very useful to get through the day, but terrible if our biases get stuck inside. That said, I think a lot of this narrative loops back to the entitlement again, as most people seem very angry that other people simply don't match their preferences, not that they're rotten people.
