I think another one is never feeling like your parents know you. Like they get you gifts for Christmas or your birthday but it’s not quite right. Doesn’t quite land.

alongside spiritual bypassing, there can be intellectual bypassing, when the parent explains with logic and reason why the kid just shouldn’t be sad or mad…

For me it's lack of curiosity. My parents think I am still the person I was in high school - interests, personality, beliefs. They don't care to know me as a person now.

My mum asks how I’m doing, but oh boy if I answer with anything other than “good thanks, yourself?” I am met with an immediate change of subject 😅

The best is when your father gets mad when you don’t share anything with them but when you do share, you’re told how wrong you are for feeling that way. Can’t win!

I have had depression since I was a teenager. When I told my mom when I was a teen that I was sad, she said "What do you have ro be sad about? You have everything you could ever ask for." I do not ever go to my parents about any emotional issues now as an adult. Ever.

My predominant feeling growing up was indignant. I recall being called spoiled all the time but it never made sense to me because I wasn’t the one spoiling me, yet the insult was always thrown in my face.

Thing is, I could go to my mother but the reactions was inconsistent. It could be she can listen and go ‘maybe it could be this’ but other times it could be ‘oh my gods it’s not that big of a deal’. So…

I was really only allowed to Experience Emotion, positive or negative, if my mom decided I had a valid enough reason to feel that way. So now as an adult I often unconsciously find myself viewing emotions as these personal private things you aren't supposed to tell anyone about, and if you do, that's oversharing, and a character flaw. And that's a really hard thing to unlearn.

We were not allowed to experience anger in my house. Did I experience it? Oh, yes! Often! As did the rest of my family. Was I given any coping skills or tools, models for healthy ways to deal?! Oh, absolutely not. I was just labeled as “always angry” and “an angry person”…as a child. Still my “label” today when I refuse to be gaslit, have boundaries violated, etc.

The way I realized how deep my emotional neglect was as a child was becoming a parent and having my own children come to me for everything. Not just the bad things, but in happy times too. Happy, sad, mad, hurt, confused. And it just hits you so hard like your inner child says “I’m so happy they have someone to be there for them like that, but it would have been nice if I did too”

My mom would just not respond especially as I became older, when I tried to be vulnerable she would just look at me, say nothing or nothing of meaning with these blank stares with disgust written across he face.

Also the invalidating “it’s all going to be fine” .. that’s good but right now it’s not and I need some support without the empty positivity

I said to my mom once when she was calling me ungrateful/spoilt... "don't confuse being middle class with how you've treated me as a person"
the thing I was ungrateful for was being sent to catholic boarding school btw because they didn't want me around 🙃 I enjoyed boarding school ngl

My mother gets offended when she suggests something I know/like/do and I correct her. I realise no one likes feeling silly or making a mistake, but that's ok. Focus on understanding what you misunderstood rather than on the fact someone called you out on it.

My mom LOVES the spiritual bypass. For everything I go through and everything I’ve gone through. Shes gonna pray for me and crying isn’t going to help me.

Years ago I talked to my mom about it. “I feel like you don’t know me at all…”. She replied “I know…” and changed the topic. 🤷🏻♀️hurtful.

My mom wrote me a paragraph on my 30th birthday telling me “you’ve had a good life so far you’ve gotten everything you’ve ever wanted” (concert tickets, purses, etc as a kid) and that I should be grateful 😭 like mom you don’t take my anxiety and depression seriously tho

Oof the first one you said - they said I was spoiled but I wasn’t given anything. It didn’t make sense (plus not caring about my emotions)

My family was well off, I had everything I needed. But they treated me like a roommate - I have no memories of hanging out with them after school or on the weekend. I was in band from middle school through high school. they literally had hundreds of opportunities to see me perform - they never showed up. I was always the kid hitching rides with friends until I was old enough to drive myself. I left for college the week after I graduated high school - and never stepped foot in their house again.

My mom is the queen of toxic positivity, bc obviously if you just stop having problems, then you won’t have any more problems! Still trying to discover and feel all my feelings after decades of stuffing them.
