Working part time at a library right now. Pay is bleak, but I can’t beat the wonders it has done for my mental health (came from classroom teaching)

I’ve applied to so many library assistant jobs but I never even get an interview 😔 I basically only have food and retail work on my resume

former library assistant!! i worked part time in a public library and it was definitely my favorite job ever but - did not pay enough (and not enough full time positions for me to move up 😔) and is definitely not 100% quiet! maybe at some points but definitely dont expect it to be silent, and some libraries are also open late! mine was open until 8pm most days

All the jobs I wanna do don’t pay what it costs to live in America! 😭 This is coming from someone with lots of work experience, a bachelor’s degree, etc. Can’t win 🫩

Former library assistant here, from the northeast. Your estimated pay is actually way higher than I’ve experienced. It’s also really hard to find a library assistant position that’s full time. Most are part-time and odd hours. Many LTAs end up cobbling together income from working at multiple libraries.

The one thing I learned about these roles is they are very sought after because if you’re wanting to become a librarian, there really aren’t any other entry level positions to apply to. Also the pay & hours are shoddy. But I still stay applying to them on Indeed 😂

I would say that if the job is at a public library, you’ll probably be required to spend some time in the children’s department, which will get noisy. Also, I disagree that small talk is minimal… for some patrons this is the only social interaction they’ll get that day so they absolutely love to talk your ear off lol. Surprisingly it can be super chaotic depending on the vibe/location/size of the library

For me, it’s sometimes the job but often it’s the people…particularly the bosses…. And, obviously, it’s me.

There are also the certifications you can take for these jobs, they help a lot more because they open more libraries to you, like a school or university library instead of just a public library

Library assistant here! Absolutely hate it! The quiet rule is no longer respected in the library so it does get loud. Patrons want to have in depth conversations. The repetitive tasks are not stimulating and the pay leaves me under the poverty level

Library assistant in Canada here, public libraries are the opposite of what you are saying here. First you need a degree to do our position, it’s busy and loud and we have very unpredictable hours.

Worked as a library assistant in college and I loved it - I worked the circulation desk but it was a smaller library on campus so I had a lot of free time to organize overflow stacks and read

At my library system, it’s FT and requires a Bachelors degree but if you don’t want to work in a customer service role or management, it’s NOT for you.

I'm actually working toward this job, mostly cause I will be going to school for archival science so I can be an archivist so this job would help me with that
