@epoc_chemistry: What are hydrocarbons USED for? At the top of a fractional distillation column come short chain hydrocarbons from methane to butane. These are burned for cooking and heating. Pentane to octane is used in petrol as fuel for cars. Naphtha is used to make plastics and other chemicals. Kerosene is used for jet fuel. Diesel contains longer chains and is used as fuel for lorries and buses. Fuel for ships and power stations is heavier than diesel. Bitumen is the lowest fraction, used for road surfacing and roofing. As the chains get longer they get less and less valuable. But they can be broken down into smaller hydrocarbons by cracking. #alkane #organicchemistry #fractionaldistilation #LearnOnTikTok #alevels #chemistry #Science #revision #scienceteacher
