As the transmasc child of two lesbian mother's, I hate that these issues have still not been solved!! Also, yes, my non biological mother was my mother. Even if she was not related to me. Even if the law would not let here be a legal parent (back then). She was my real mother. They both were.

In Australia, I grew my children inside me. Years on I changed my birth certificate to match my true self. Legally they do not allow those changes to be updated on the kids certificates so legally, their 'mother' does not exist. That hurts.

I feel like it would be nicer if they remove the gendered labels entirely and simply had three labels, one for the parent who gave birth, one for a biological parent who did not give birth, and one for a legal parent who is not biologically the parent, It prevents inaccurate labels and makes things easier in all situations

IMO the birth certificate should say Parent for both, with a tick box for Bio Relation and another for Birthing Parent. If neither were the Birthing Parent then there should be a sub-section labeled Known Bio Donor (Egg/Sperm), and Surrogate.

“Birth parent” would be so much easier…but as someone with genetic conditions, methinks that having a database of “mothers” to search is easier for them when it comes to eugenics, and who they want having more babies or not 😒

They decided that mother isn't gendered which is why the person who gives birth is recorded as the mother irrespective of gender. It's an interesting and obscure definition which matches the UK legal system. They care more about the mother than father as the mother has to be the biological mother and the father or other parent doesn't have to be genetically related due to the amount of fathers who aren't the biological father.
