also excuse my ignorance but isn't wearing the hijab supposed to be a personal choice? Last I checked, being forced to wear it or be killed doesn't seem like much of a personal choice our if freedom.

Polly (yes really) :
Isn’t the whole point that you CHOSE to wear it, so when it’s FORCED it kind of defeats the purpose? Or am I totally wrong here?

Sorry but the hijab rule in Iran has LONG been lifted. Stop pedalling propaganda, if Iranians living IN Iran wanted to gov gone it would’ve been gone, but we want the government to STAY. Iranian diaspora is actually real weird …

consent is central to the value of sacred practices within religion/spirituality. if it's not an act that comes from the heart, it's just control and abuse.

Ahhhh. THANK YOU sm sister. They have this same concept with mosques - I always say, if a building is used to torture, plan murder and detain Iranian people for existing- is it still a place of worship? No. It becomes a building. If it gets burnt down in a protest then that’s a good thing cos it’s the burning down of a place where evil things are taking place ? That applies to ANY establishment, not just mosques, before people try to come for me.

Exactly! The issue for women and clothing across the world is always freedom of CHOICE. It’s when you don’t have a choice that a piece of clothing represents oppression.

people forget that some are from other religions and are still forced to wear a hijab - that immediately shows the gov doesn't care about reliogion but oppression

A revolution should target the government, not turn into hate against Islam or Muslims worldwide. Glorifying the Shah a known dictator just proves this isn’t really about Iran’s future, but about insecurity and image politics.

I'm from Türkiye and not religious, i was in a street market a few years ago and looking at this scarf stand trying to find a scarf to put on my bikini or to wear as a top when going out. The women next to me were hijabi and were buying them as hijabs to use as such. A lady and i bought the same scarf, she bought a hijab and i bought a top. Neither is sacred on their own, for her it became a religious item and for me it became a cute top. In my household we use the same scarfs as a scarf as a fashion statement and also as a head covering when we're visiting our dead relatives graves, you're exactly right. Context matters, and also women burning hijabs that were pushed onto them not by choice but to restrict their freedom is not about the hijab but about the system. It's about what it represents and that is the context. When there is freedom no one burns anything to protest. Iranian women are fighting for their freedom and they should be supported and respected.
