This is a challenge for me. I am also challenged by first tone. My Laoshi has be say tone one so high pitched that it seems very unnatural to me. I never speak normally at that pitch. I feel like Mickey Mouse sometimes 😳😂

Finally someone addressing this. 你好 is usually a ton of people's first words. Then you get told it's two third tones, but then when they speak it they use second and third tones. It can be so demotivating when you don't even know you are listening for a tone that's not even spoken, yet you have no idea.

sounds like how Bù changes to bú if the next word has a 4th tone so that it flows better (or from what I've heard in my tiny time learning it, with words with yi)

It’s wild to me how many teachers don’t discuss tone sandhi when they teach tones. What is the point in all theory and no practice?

I thought the last one was supposed to keep the 3rd tone as it is. Is it because 好美 works like a unit? It's so confusing for a non-tonal language speaker 🥲🥲

I've traveled to Guangzhou twice and the way I've heard the tones is way different as textbook mandarin. Mimicry tends to be the best tool for us students, even with local tonalities

That’s why I’m paying attention to exactly how it’s pronounced before I repeat it, and the way I know that I butchered it that the app won’t register if I pronounce it wrong
