One thing we miss here on Madeira are the Portuguese castle towns, particularly near the Spanish border. Our favorite was Marvao. These castle towns not only provided defense against Spain, but were important landmarks for my ancestors — secret Jews escaping from Spain after the 1492 expulsion.
