Major spoilers. The film had a bleak ending but the book had a happy one. They are rescued from drowning before reaching the island; they get antibiotics (plague is highly treatable) and are reunited with Snitter’s owner (he didn’t die) and he and Rowf gets adopted with him.

Interestingly enough, this movie is based on a book of the same name, and the movie’s ending was what the author originally envisioned for the book. However the editors thought it was too depressing and ordered him to change it so that they made it to an island in the end.
