Just recently found your page and I think what I appreciate is you don’t expect everyone around you to be so awestruck by the fact you can speak mandarin. Even when they are, you seem very humble. I never had the spicy version of douhua, but there’s a sweet version I eat in Fuzhou that is so good, with a ginger syrup or something on top. It’s like crème brûlée but without the crunch. But even softer somehow.

I work in a Mexican restaurant and my coworkers who are Hispanic with Spanish as their native language are always impressed with my progress in learning Spanish. I think some people of different nationalities appreciate an American person taking the time to learn about their language/culture! It shows them we care to hear and see them
