She is a not a bad writer, but she lacks some basic fiction-writing skills; for example, “show don’t tell.” Right away, we meet the English teacher - and he monologues his entire history, motivations, desires to class, instead of these being carefully explored/revealed to the reader through character-driven plot points. That kind of exposition falls flat for me.

I enjoyed the book, I think she captured the teenage girl mind so well. I wish there was more imagery, and she could’ve slowed down in some parts for emphasis

I enjoyed half his age, but I found the prose style to be a little redundant in some places. the jacket copy is a great example, where it opens with a list of adjectives to describe waldo. there were a number of places in the novel where this cadence was used and at a certain point it lost its punch

i really WANTED to like it, but it was so much shock factor and not much healing afterward? idk i loved the shopping addiction and aspects that related to her mother, but omfg the end was so disappointing!

i got to chapter 15 in my first sitting and was disappointed with the writing :/ BUT it’s a first novel, and i really like the concept and i see the vision

I enjoyed the book I have so many thoughts - she’s great a visual storytelling and evoking deep set emotions. Sometimes it can get bogged down by its own purpose- but I appreciated the book so much.

Your description of The Disappear reminds me of the marriage at the heart of Anatomy of a Fall (2023) another entry in the Pathetic Man canon. It also has two artists where the woman is the breadwinner and the man deeply resents her for it. Their big fight and Sandra Hüller’s monologue taking him down fundamentally altered my self image and how I approach my life

Amy & Isabelle by Elizabeth Strout deals with this subject matter in a very serious yet quietly upsetting way. I highly recommend it!!!
