#asoiaf #gameofthrones #houseofthedragon #aknightofthesevenkingdoms #stannisbaratheon Stannis Baratheon, the one true king. While the lords of Westeros fought over crowns, castles, and titles, Stannis was the man who answered when the realm needed him most. When Maester Aemon sent ravens seeking aid for the Night's Watch, the great lords of Westeros ignored the call. The Wall was facing a threat few people understood, and the Night's Watch desperately needed men, supplies, and support. Stannis answered. He sailed north, arrived at the Wall, and brought his army with him. He did not come because it was politically convenient. He came because the Night's Watch had called for help, and Stannis believed it was his duty to answer. At the Wall, Stannis defeated Mance Rayder's host and rescued the Night's Watch from a seemingly hopeless situation. He then remained in the North while the rest of the realm continued fighting its wars for the Iron Throne. This is one of the clearest examples of Stannis's defining characteristic: duty. He had already suffered defeat at the Blackwater. His claim to the throne was challenged by multiple kings. Yet when the Night's Watch called for help, Stannis did what almost every other powerful lord failed to do. He answered. Stannis understood something many of the other claimants did not. The Iron Throne was not the only thing worth fighting for. Beyond the Wall was an existential threat, and the Seven Kingdoms were dangerously unprepared for it. His actions at the Wall also show why Stannis is such a fascinating character in A Song of Ice and Fire. He is harsh, stubborn, demanding, and often ruthless, but he takes duty seriously. He does not need to be loved to do what he believes is right. The man who demanded that Westeros recognize his lawful claim to the Iron Throne was also the man who turned his army north when the Night's Watch needed him. Stannis Baratheon did not answer the call because it promised him an easy victory. He answered because someone had to. The one true king of Westeros was the king who remembered that the realm existed beyond the Iron Throne. If you love ASOIAF lore, Stannis Baratheon, Maester Aemon, Night's Watch, the Wall, Mance Rayder, Battle of the Wall, Targaryen history, House Baratheon, War of the Five Kings, Westeros, Game of Thrones, and George R. R. Martin's writing, Stannis's northern campaign is one of the most important parts of his story.
