Thomas Sankara was a revolutionary African leader, especially known in Burkina Faso, and is considered one of the most influential presidents in Africa. He was born on December 21, 1949, in Yako. He was originally a military officer, but his ideas were strongly revolutionary, anti-colonial, and opposed to dependence on Western powers. When he came to power in 1983, Sankara introduced major changes in the country. He changed the country’s name from Upper Volta to Burkina Faso, which means “Land of Upright (or Honorable) People.” He focused heavily on self-reliance, especially in agriculture. He encouraged people to consume what they produced instead of relying on imported food. During his rule, the production of crops like maize and millet increased significantly, helping the country become food self-sufficient in a short time. One of his most famous achievements was a large-scale tree-planting campaign to fight desertification. He planted millions of trees across the country to protect the land and improve rainfall. This was a very advanced idea at the time and is one of the reasons he is still remembered today as an environmental hero. Sankara also promoted social equality. He supported women’s rights and banned harmful practices such as forced marriage and female genital mutilation. He fought corruption by reducing government luxury, even lowering his own salary, and lived a very simple life to set an example for the people. However, his rule did not last long. On October 15, 1987, he was assassinated in a military coup in the capital city Ouagadougou. His death is widely attributed to his former ally Blaise Compaoré, who then took power. Many believe the coup had foreign involvement because Sankara opposed global powers, although this has not been fully proven in all details. #thomassankara #foryoupage #communism #161
