You're not alone Zac.
I was three years old the first time I saw her. No one else did. She stood at the edge of my world and quietly led me away from my town, out into the campo.
Behind me, my abuela was calling my name, her voice rising with urgency, but I did not turn back. I remember feeling certain, almost comforted, as if I was being guided somewhere I belonged. When my abuela finally reached me and asked why I hadn’t listened, why I hadn’t come back, I told her simply, “The lady was taking me home.”
That moment stayed with her. It shaped the way she raised me, the stories she shared, and the care she took to help me understand what I had experienced. She told me that some of us walk with very thin layers between this world and the spirit world, and that spirits recognize that openness. They are drawn to it.
I am forty now. My abuela has been physically gone for many years, but she has never truly left me. She still comes to me in quiet ways, reminding me of what she tried to teach me all along, that we are of this earth, that we are connected, and that connection does not end at the boundary of what we can see.
