Really, every time I see American police officers in videos, physical fitness seems completely optional. Many look less like law enforcement and more like the Michelin Man in uniform. In most developed countries, police officers are required to meet strict fitness standards, because chasing, restraining, and protecting people actually requires a functioning body. In the U.S., however, it often looks as if the real training focuses less on endurance and mobility and more on mastering the fine art of surviving on donuts and drive-through meals. When your officers can’t outrun a suspect, it’s no wonder they reach for the gun instead.
