these companies aren't thinking about the long term impact, if they're not training people now, who will take over in the future as people retire/leave?

A degree isn’t enough anymore, you need experience, personal projects, even internships for a graduate role, it’s just what happens when the pool of graduates keeps growing. More selection criteria to filter even more grads

Very true. My department used to always hire grads, even up to 6 one year. But we haven’t done any graduate recruitment for the last two years, budget for experienced hires only.

Fandoms ruined my life :
I had to take a part time job and consider a new degree in a safer field because I cannot find any jobs within my field, everytime I find one its an entry job where you need 2-3 years experience minimum.

I feel like once I get that 2-3 years of experience, they’re going to want someone with 6 years of experience

i keep getting told I'm overqualified, that two MAs and a PhD is excessive and a C2 Cambridge level mastery of English isn't necessary on the market (I'm not from an English speaking country). finding a job seems borderline impossible nowadays

What do they actually think will happen in 10 years when they need experienced people but no one has experience because we can’t even get our foot in the door

They stopped hiring, period. I have 6 years of experience, can’t find anything, everybody searches for a the perfect match for their role, for the lowest possible pay, and I’m never the perfect candidate no matter what 🫶

Which is by definition wrong… you can not be asking 7+ years of experience in an entry level job ( personal experience) it is appalling and needs to change ASAP. That’s for all the industries
