To those who don't understand the lore: The differences come down to a timeline split: Bayonetta 1 is the original "Amnesiac" who was broken by her mother’s death and sealed in a coffin for 500 years by Jeanne to hide the Left Eye from the angels. Bayonetta 2 follows this same version, but deals with the fallout of the God of Chaos, Aesir, whose evil half (Loptr) is behind the Witch Hunts while his good half (Loki) fled to the future. However, because the first game involved little cereza traveling to the future (because of evil balder), the timeline fractured. By following the advice to "keep her watch close to her heart," the younger Cereza blocks the blow that originally imprisoned her, meaning she never loses her memories or her will to fight. This creates the Bayonetta 3 version (Cereza) and a "reformed" timeline where she grew up as a confident warrior who never slept in a lake, distinguishing her from the version who had to regain her identity. While they share the same soul, one is the survivor of a 500 year slumber, and the other is the result of a past that was subtly rewritten to ensure she never lost her strength. Bayonetta 3 sorta messed up the lore but we pretend it never happened 🥰
