@itadakihealthy: Never assume a product is automatically vegan in Japan! 💚 Hi, I’m a vegan nutritionist, living in Tokyo for 11 years 💚 How to be vegan in Japan? 👉🏻Grab your copy of “The Ultimate Vegan Guide for Japan!” 141 pages packed with vegan info (last updated January 25th, 2026) payhip.com/itadakihealthy 💚 OR just book a vegan shopping tour with me! 😍 https://www.airbnb.co.uk/experiences/6592287?viralityEntryPoint=2&s=76 ‼️Rule number 1: NEVER assume that a product is vegan-friendly based on what you are used to in the west. Japan uses a lot of unexpected ingredients in food, so you always need to check! In some cases (like the onigiri) the dish-extract isn’t even mentioned on the label! I only found out by directly contacting the customer service… ❗️Even tough a product says „soy“, it’s not automatically vegan friendly: Unlike in western countries, a soy product in Japan does NOT imply being vegan-friendly. Soy is not typically viewed as a „replacement food“ for animal products, so it’s often combined with ingredients of animal origin. ❗️Even though a product might say “guilt free” it might still contain meat: guilt free in Japan is a marketing term which is used for “low calorie”/ “better than high fat products” and has nothing to do with the western term “guilt-free (no animals harmed). ⁉️If you can’t read Japanese, no worries! Here’s a collection of some frequently appearing animal ingredients in foods, you should definitely know about: 肉- any kind of meat 魚 - any kind of fish かつお・さけ・さば different fish extracts 乳 - dairy (except 乳化剤 which simply means ‘emulsifier’*) 卵 - egg ゼラチン - gelatin チーズ - cheese ビーフ・牛 - beef チキン・鳥 - chicken コチニール - cochineal (crushed red beetles) カルミン - Carmine (same as cochineal) しらこ - Fish sperm ❕*乳化剤 is the kanji for ‘emulsifier’ and it does not imply that it includes milk. While emulsifiers can be plant or animal-derived, in Japan, they mostly come from soy or other plant sources. 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱 #vegan #veganjapan #vegantravel #japan #onigiri

Japan isn't vegan centric, so don't expect it from them. and their rules of ingredients marking are different

I found it easy…by staying at home, cooking all my meals from scratch, regularly checking vegan fb pages so find out which products I could ever and only ever going to vegan restaurants when I did eat out 😅 which basically means yeah it was doable…definitely didn’t have as much of a social life compared to other ALTs I knew! But as an introvert that was fine.

every vegan guide: "standard soyjoy isn't vegan but these 3 soyjoy crunchy bars are vegan and you can get them almost everywhere"
I was over a month in Japan and have never seen a single vegan soyjoy bar. I'm pretty sure they're a myth
